Kevin Foster, Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for Torbay, has welcomed news that the South Devon Fisheries Development Project is one of 20 projects nationwide to win funding from the Coastal Communities Fund.
The £450,000 South Devon Fisheries Development Project aims to support and promote the region's fishing and tourism industries through innovation and investment. As a result of the funding around 441 full time jobs could be saved, and up to 38 direct full time jobs and 52 part time jobs created. South Devon College in Paignton has received £125,747 of the total for its role in the project.
The additional funds will also support 100 businesses to innovate, reduce costs, develop supply chain networks and secure future employment in the region's shellfish and tourism industries. Whilst focussed on developing Fishing and Associated Industries in the South Hams, the project can support any eligible Business in Torbay.
This funding follows the £1.4m Torbay received from the Coastal Communities Fund last year to help support job creation.
Commenting Kevin said: “This latest funding will see jobs created and more opportunities for the next generation in South Devon’s most traditional industry. For centuries fishermen have been finding and landing their catch in our beautiful bay, building a strong reputation for both quality and taste. Whilst focussed on the South Hams this project will help develop a new offer, support and jobs for those who live here.
“What is exciting about this project is the way it will link different parts of the industry to deliver new products and innovation. This ranges from funding more apprenticeships to by-products being used as fertiliser on local farms, all confirming that our fishing industry has a positive future as part of the long term plan for our economy.”
