Torbay's MP Kevin Foster took the opportunity of today's Department for Work and Pensions Questions to raise the Disability Confident scheme. The scheme helps employers recruit and retain great people, with many businesses in the bay already signed up to it.
The scheme also aims to:
• challenge attitudes and increase understanding of disability
• help employers draw from the widest possible pool of talent
• secure high-quality staff who are skilled, loyal and hard working
• improve employee morale and commitment by demonstrating fair treatment
Kevin has been involved in events in our bay to promote the scheme and heard about the benefits it brings to employers and those they employ via it, he is keen to see more work done to widen the numbers of people who benefit from it.
Public Sector employers need to play their part, so Kevin is pleased Torbay Council is signed up as a Disability Confident employer. With the local elections taking place next week, Kevin has been talking with Cllr Dave Thomas, the Conservative Group Leader, about how the Disability Confident approach could be enhanced and become a more recognised part of Torbay Council’s work in our bay.
