Every fortnight I write a “Kev’s Column” for the Herald Express and you can read the latest edition (Published on Wednesday 5th August 2020) below.
Local Lockdowns
The last week has seen some major developments in relation to the Coronavirus (Covid-19), with some restrictions re-imposed in large parts of North West England and a delay in the reopening of some businesses, including Bowling Alleys and Casinos. This followed the removal of Spain and Luxembourg from the Travel Corridors list as infection rates in those countries increased. Those returning to the UK from them will now be required to self-isolate for 14 days.
Thankfully our bay is a very long way from being in the position Greater Manchester is, with very few cases and no Covid-19 patients admitted to Torbay Hospital for some weeks, yet the recent news reminds us the virus has not gone away and still poses a threat if we become complacent.
Our NHS and Social Care Teams have worked hard to protect us. Many local businesses are going to great lengths to ensure we can shop, visit an attraction, have a meal out or enjoy a pint safely this summer. All we need to do in return is follow the guidance given when we do, wear a face covering when needed, ensure we wash our hands regularly and, crucially, if we develop any of the symptoms get tested immediately.
Enjoy Summer Safely
It has been good to see visitors in our bay again, with many businesses finally getting the trade they need to survive.
The future of large numbers of jobs and many local businesses currently hangs in the balance. A good summer will be vital for businesses ranging from independent shops to large scale attractions like Paignton Zoo, with each business supporting many local families who work there.
Sadly some businesses are already having to make redundancies due to the impact of Covid-19. The best way we can all help prevent further local job losses is to get out and enjoy summer safely by supporting our local attractions.
Town Investment Plan
The Torquay Town Investment Plan has been submitted to the Government.
The document sets out ambitious plans to use the £25m on offer from the Government for a Torquay Town Deal to make Torquay one of the best places to live and work in the South West with better connectivity, an internationally renowned tourism sector, a higher value health economy and a more highly skilled community.
It includes projects in the Town Centre to create new homes and better commercial space. Transport developments, including a new railway station at Edginswell, improvements to Torquay station and £1.75m of support for revitalising the Pavilion. Wider areas of the town investment plan also include culture and tourism projects and improving skills and employment.
This investment plan would provide an excellent return for government, enhance our Town and secure significant private sector investment. I am confident the Government will agree.
