These last few months have been a worrying and uncertain time, particularly for the Bay’s iconic tourism and hospitality sector. I welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement setting out the third phase of our recovery from Covid-19 which will see many economically vital businesses in the Bay opening their doors again on 4 July.
This re-opening will include pubs, restaurants, campsites, hotels, hairdressers and arcades, subject to strict compliance with Covid-19 secure guidelines.
Guidance has been published on how businesses can reduce the risk of the virus by taking certain steps to protect workers and customers. This includes avoiding face-to-face seating and reducing the number of people in enclosed spaces.
I have spoken regularly with Carolyn Custerson of the English Riviera BID, local tourism Heads and the Council about support for our vital tourism and hospitality sector and have seen the work that has been put into ensuring locals and those visiting the Bay will have a safe and enjoyable experience.
The Prime Minister also released updated guidance on meeting people from outside your household from 4 July. This new guidance will mean a group of 2 households can meet in any setting - public or private, indoors or outdoors - whilst maintaining social distancing. It also covers guidelines for those who are currently shielding, those who wish to form a support bubble and on larger gatherings, such as weddings.
Given the significant fall in the prevalence of the virus, it is also now advised people keep a social distance of 1 metre plus, 2 metres where possible.
