Kev’s Column:
Brexit
Whilst I have received less correspondence on Brexit over the last week than in previous ones it is safe to say many residents are feeling as frustrated as I am about the continuing impasse.
Parliament has voted against leaving without an agreement (No-Deal), against the deal negotiated with the EU and against virtually every deal likely to be possible with the EU. A totally contradictory set of votes.
Extending Article 50 is not a solution but became necessary in the face of a bill being pushed through by one vote using procedures meant to be reserved for the most grave of situations. I hope the MPs behind it will reflect on where our political system is and how the use of procedural tricks does not build confidence in it.
When Parliament returns next week we must make progress towards delivering the Referendum result.
Upskirting
A new law making “Upskirting”, covertly taking photos under a person’s clothing without consent, a specific criminal offence has come into force.
A specific offence makes it easier to prosecute and put offenders on the Sex Offenders Register. The development of micro-camera technology has made this an increasing problem, with the ability to share images online making it even more distressing for victims.
I joined other MPs in shouting shame in the Commons when a previous attempt to bring in such a law was blocked by one MP using archaic procedures. I am therefore pleased the Government picked this up and has, with cross-party support, put it into law.
Marilyn Martin
It was with great sadness I heard one of our bay’s true community champions, Marilyn Martin, had died.
Marilyn was a passionate campaigner determined to make a difference. She saw the possibilities in every youth who walked in the door of the Acorn Centre, plus ensured those responsible for local services were not allowed to forget what needed to be done.
Four years ago I got the chance to take two community activists to a reception at Number 10 Downing Street. Marilyn joined Fr Gorran Chapman and Myself for a unique evening, with a photo in front of the famous black door as we left.
It will seem strange going to the Acorn Centre and not seeing Marilyn there, but her legacy will live on for many years.
Happy Easter
After recent weeks at Westminster the prospect of Easter Weekend at home in the bay is very welcome.
Easter is a time of reflection, then celebration as the darkness of Good Friday is followed by the light and joy of Easter Day. I will be spending time with my family and reflecting
on the challenges ahead when Parliament returns next week.
I hope all Herald Express readers have a very Happy Easter.
