Local MP Kevin Foster spoke in the Second Reading of the Investigatory Powers Bill yesterday. This new law will update and consolidate the powers that the security and intelligence agencies require to keep us safe in an increasingly dangerous world. At the same time, the law will maintain strict codes of practice and will introduce stronger privacy safeguards.
Kevin was reassured both by the judicial oversight provided in the bill, and the fact that warrants could only be issued if they were proportionate.
Given how strongly our judiciary has stood up to Governments over many years on the use of such powers, Kevin is certain that this level of scrutiny will continue and was therefore happy to support this bill.
