Kevin welcomes new Torbay Youth Housing Partnership which will see 36 affordable homes delivered thanks to a £4,102,937 Government Funding Boost.
It is part of nearly £220 million which is being given to councils across the country to help deliver over 800 homes for rough sleepers and help prevent families from becoming homeless.
This brings total government investment to £2.4 billion over three years (2022-25) to tackle homelessness and end rough sleeping for good.
Vital new supported accommodation to help prevent youth homelessness will be created in our bay thanks to a £4,102,937 funding windfall announced as part of a £220 million package of government funding being given to councils today.
The new plans will see 36 homes established for young people at risk of or facing homelessness. The housing provision created will have onsite 24-hour staffing for young people with medium to high support needs, plus options for transitioning into supported housing when a young person is ready to live with a lower level of support.
The announcement comes a year after Torbay MP Kevin Foster spent a night sleeping outdoors at YMCA South Devon in Goodrington, housing campaigners, to highlight the issue of youth homelessness and the need for additional supported housing provision in our bay. He has worked with the YMCA and Torbay Council to secure additional investment.
Commenting on today’s announcement Kevin Foster MP said: “This is a fantastic level of funding to secure for delivering much needed new housing. This is not just about providing a home but support as well.
It only takes one evening sleeping outside to realise what impact sleeping rough can have, especially for a vulnerable young person. I am pleased to have not only helped raise the profile of this issue, but to have worked with colleagues to secure vital funding to make a difference.”
The plans will be delivered by Torbay Council, YMCA Exeter and YMCA South Devon as part of a ground-breaking Supported Housing Pathway, securing stable accommodation for the young people of Torbay. The three organisations have a long history of supporting young people in need across our bay. The funding announcement is part of Homes England’s Single Homelessness Accommodation Programme (SHAP).
The new Supported Housing Pathway will provide a comprehensive support system for young individuals in Torbay facing challenges in securing stable housing.
