Bowling the Silver Jack
As the summer weather arrives many outdoor sports have been getting underway over the last few weeks, including at the many bowls clubs across our bay.
Last Saturday (17th April) I was invited to bowl the Silver Jack and ceremonially “open” the season at Torbay Country Bowling Club. The club’s green is set in the gardens of Oldway Mansion, with a fantastic view of its magnificent façade.
Whilst numbers present had to be limited for social distancing reasons, I was still able to get a little bit of coaching from the Club Captain and hear about their work to attract new members. The Club Officers were keen to highlight how they have sought to provide a warm welcome and counter the image of past eras when a new female member might be advised of exactly how many pleats her skirt must have at the front, whilst gentleman might be required to wear a tie for an informal match.
If you are looking for a new hobby post lockdown, I am advised all equipment will be supplied and free coaching is available. All you need is a pair of flat soled shoes. There are 2 greens and you would be made to feel most welcome, even if you have never set foot on a Bowling Green before.
