The work of local churches to support those who might otherwise be sleeping rough in our bay was highlighted in Parliament this week.
During the regular session of questions to the Church of England in the House of Commons Torbay MP Kevin Foster asked about what steps the church was taking to support work by local parishes to end rough sleeping. During his answer Andrew Selous MP, the Second Church Estates Commissioner, congratulated the local churches providing the Winter Night Shelter in Paignton and thanked them for the work they are doing. He particularly highlighted the work of Mark Gridley and Gary Mitchell, saying he knew they “have been instrumental in leading that work” and “that the whole House is grateful for what they are doing.”.
Mr Selous went onto say he was sure churches across England could learn from the excellent Night Shelter initiative.
Commenting Torbay MP Kevin Foster said: “Church buildings and congregations Church buildings and congregations can work well with local councils to reduce rough sleeping by providing not only a bed and a meal, but the opportunity for lasting spiritual and emotional support through membership of the Church family. It is therefore good to be able to highlight and see recognised the work of the Night Shelter.”
