Every fortnight Kevin writes a “Kev’s Column” for the Herald Express and you can read the latest edition (Published on Wednesday 16th September 2020) below:
Coronavirus
It was good to see our bay bustling with visitors over the weekend and many businesses have worked hard to ensure they can trade safely.
Whilst Covid-19 rates are still very low in our bay we cannot be complacent. With cases rising across the UK, following second waves appearing in nearby European nations, new restrictions have been brought in this week.
This virus turns against us our most natural emotions when meeting with close friends and family. Evidence shows in situations where we are socialising it is most likely to spread, hence the move to groups of no more than 6 meeting together.
Progress is being made on vaccine research and developing treatments for Covid-19, but for now these new restrictions are a vital part of keeping it under control.
Student Route
Last week I launched the new "Student" Route, which will be the main migration route for those looking to study in the UK for periods of 12 months or more.
It is the first part of the new "Points Based" System and will open for applications on 5th October. It includes simplified rules to make it easier for genuine students to apply and for attempts to use it for work not study in the UK to be prevented. Those using this system are not eligible for support from public funds whilst in the UK.
There have been several ways I have fed into the changes the experiences and thoughts from our bay, for example applications will be simpler for those undertaking a foundation year ahead of their degree at a UK University. It will also allow "non-visa" nationals, eg Brazil, South Korea or Japan, to study courses for up to 180 days (As opposed to the current limit of 30 days) at recognised education providers without having to seek specific immigration permission to do so, potentially providing a boost for our language schools who specialise in such courses.
Fire Safety
Since the Grenfell disaster I have met survivors of that fateful evening, having visited the site shortly after the fire itself.
Their dignity and determination in the face of such loss is commendable, yet the way their concerns were dismissed by a public sector housing body and regulators before the disaster raises real questions the inquiry must tackle.
The Fire Safety Bill, which cleared the House of Commons last week, sets the foundation for implementing the recommendations from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, which I want to see set in law. I am aware of some misleading claims online, yet these do not reflect the impact the Bill will have.
The Bill will pave the way for more accountability from building owners and enforcement from fire and rescue authorities to hold irresponsible owners to account.
Surgery Times
Following recent changes in public health guidance I have restarted my regular advice surgeries, although they must be by appointment only.
My next surgeries will be on Friday 18th September from 3pm till 5pm and Saturday 26th September from 11am till 1pm both at 5-7 East St, Torquay, TQ2 5SD. Social distancing measures will be in place and please bring a face covering unless you have a medical condition which means you cannot wear one.
To book an appointment you can email me at [email protected] or telephone 01803 214989.
