Following yesterday's High Court judgement on Parliament being asked to consider Article 50, a number of constituents have contacted me to ask my position.
I have been clear since the Referendum result was announced on the 23rd June this year. Although I campaigned to Remain, I totally respect that the majority was for Leave, and first and foremost I am a democrat.
I therefore did not support the case brought before the High Court and neither did I endorse it. I believe it would set a worrying precedent to just ignore Referendum results, particularly one in which over 33million British citizens have participated.
It is therefore disappointing to say the least to hear that 100 unelected Liberal Democrat peers (a ridiculous number for a party that only has 8 MPs) are planning to subvert the will of the people by tabling amendments.
My view is that Parliament's role is now to work together to implement the best possible outcome in terms of delivering the Leave vote made by the British people on the 23rd June, rather than refight the Referendum debate all over again.
