Torquay’s new Community Diagnostic Centre was officially opened today (Tuesday 12th November 2024), bringing advanced healthcare facilities to the heart of the Town Centre.
The new facility will increase diagnostic capacity and reduce waiting times, with state-of-the-art equipment to deliver MRI, CT, ultrasound, X-ray, echocardiography, ECG, lung function, sleep studies and holter tests and scans. It has already seen more than 1,400 people since it’s doors first opened in September.
The centre is already freeing up teams at nearby Torbay Hospital to focus on more complex cases, as well as offering urgent and emergency care, plus providing a fully integrated digital service to enable results to be shared immediately with NHS teams.
The new community diagnostic centre in Torquay is one of five being funded by NHS England South West. It was announced last August as part of work to secure more support for our local NHS and regenerate Torquay Town Centre. The Community Diagnostic Centre has regenerated a large former supermarket building which had been derelict for over 7 years.
Commenting on the opening, Torbay’s former Conservative MP Kevin Foster said: “This new diagnostic centre is not just great news for local patients, but the town centre as well. Today’s opening marks the delivery of a major regeneration project I worked with the Conservative Leadership of Torbay Council to deliver. Now with plans for Union Square and the historic Market Building coming forward, there is a real opportunity to start reshaping our town for the better.”
On a tour today Kevin was able to see the CT and MRI Scanners, x-ray machine and the consultation rooms, many of which include ultrasound equipment. I also spoke with staff from Torbay Hospital and InHealth, the company running the new centre, about the further opportunities to improve healthcare it brings.
